Regional Training Program in Waste Management and Sustainable Tourism
Test Rapid urbanization and population growth in ASEAN pose challenges for clean air, land, and essential services. Waste generation in Southeast Asia is expected to increase by 150% by 2025 compared to 1995 levels. Tourism boosts economies but strains infrastructure, leading to increased waste and pollution. The ASEAN Municipal Solid Waste Management Enhancement (AMUSE) project addresses waste management challenges in medium-sized tourist cities, emphasizing knowledge exchange and private sector integration. Leveraging tourism industry innovation is vital for sustainable waste management. The project aims to develop a digital knowledge platform for waste management optimization and standards. The AMUSE project, with support from AIT RRCAP, has launched a capacity-building training program to address capacity needs in waste management and sustainable tourism in ASEAN cities. This program, based on a rapid training needs assessment, focuses on waste management and circular economy tailored for municipal and tourism sectors.
Training aim and objectives
The aim of the training programme is to enhance the knowledge, skills, and capacities across all levels of ASEAN Municipal Solid Waste Management Enhancement (AMUSE) project partner organizations to tackle waste management challenges in medium-sized touristic cities in ASEAN.
Participants to the training will attain the following outcomes:
- Develop a deeper understanding and strengthened capacities in waste management, circular economy principles, and sustainable tourism practices.
- Knowledge of best practices based on shared experiences from diverse experts and experiences within the ASEAN region.
- Enhanced expertise and capabilities necessary for crafting and implementing effective waste management policies and strategies at both municipal and national levels.
- Strengthened capacity to engage in cross-sectoral collaboration and stakeholder engagement to address the complex and interconnected challenges of waste management.
- Improved ability to translate theoretical knowledge into practical action by providing training on the utilization of relevant actionable insights, tools, and resources.

Module 1: Introduction to Circular Economy (CE) and Sustainability

Description: Leaners will be introduced to key performance indicators (KPIs) and monitoring tools to assess the effectiveness of waste management and circular economy activities in tourism destinations and municipalities. Learners will also be introduced to crosscutting issues of waste and climate change and carbon emission estimation from the waste sector
Note: Each Module will be 1.5 – 3 Hour.

Duration: July - Nov 2024. The training program will span over a period of five months, with each module being delivered online (live webinar session).
Platform: The training sessions will be conducted online via Webex. Webex links to each module will be sent to each registered participant for each module.
Certification: Participants will receive a joint certificate from GIZ and AIT RRC.AP upon successful completion of all the AMUSE training modules.

The kNOwWaste Knowledge Platform was developed through a Project Cooperation Agreement funding by UNEP on 2016. The platform provides data and information on holistic waste management to stakeholders in Asia and the Pacific region. The platform was developed with the following aims: generate and consolidate data or information on holistic waste management, transform data into easily comprehensible outputs for use by key stakeholders, map out and disseminate information on international waste management projects under the GPWM and UNEP projects as well as other international partners, and provide capacity building support through dissemination of data or information support for relevant stakeholders on holistic waste and waste management system.
