Rapid urbanization and population growth in ASEAN pose challenges for clean air, land, and essential services. Waste generation in Southeast Asia is expected to increase by 150% by 2025 compared to 1995 levels. Tourism boosts economies but strains infrastructure, leading to increased waste and pollution. The ASEAN Municipal Solid Waste Management Enhancement (AMUSE) project addresses waste management challenges in medium-sized tourist cities, emphasizing knowledge exchange and private sector integration. Leveraging tourism industry innovation is vital for sustainable waste management. The project aims to develop a digital knowledge platform for waste management optimization and standards. The AMUSE project, with support from AIT RRCAP, has launched a capacity-building training program to address capacity needs in waste management and sustainable tourism in ASEAN cities. This program, based on a rapid training needs assessment, focuses on waste management and circular economy tailored for municipal and tourism sectors.
The aim of the training programme is to enhance the knowledge, skills, and capacities across all levels of AMUSE project partner organizations to tackle waste management challenges in medium-sized touristic cities in ASEAN.
